Summerhays shoots to lead, Johnson lurks
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 07 - 2013

SILVIS, Illinois — American Daniel Summerhays fired a nine-under-par 62 to grab a two-stroke lead over Canadian David Hearn heading into Sunday's final round of the John Deere Classic here.
Defending champion Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters winner and overnight co-leader, was lurking just off the pace another shot back at 16-under-par 197 after posting 67 at TPC Deere Run in the third round Saturday.
Summerhays, looking for his first PGA Tour win, had 10 birdies against a lone bogey in ideal scoring conditions, using a string of three in a row from the 15th hole to vault to the top of the leaderboard.
Hearn, also seeking his maiden tour victory, posted eight birdies and one bogey in his 64, running off three successive birdies over the same stretch of holes from 15.
Tied for fourth on 198 were Americans J.J. Henry (65) and Jerry Kelly (66).
Australian Matt Jones and Americans Nicholas Thompson and Chris Kirk were another shot back. Two-time US Junior Amateur champion Jordan Spieth, 19, was among three players on 200, six shots off the pace after three rounds.
Johnson sank not one but two massive putts on Saturday, a 60-foot eagle putt on the par-five second hole then a 42-foot birdie putt on the par-four 14th, to surge into contention.
Park seizes lead
Park Hee-young shot a 10-under 61 to take the lead in the third round of the Manulife Financial Classic.
South Korea's Park is at 20-under par 193 and has a slim one-shot lead heading into Sunday's final round of the LPGA Tour event at the Grey Silo Golf Course.
Park is just the 11th player in LPGA history to shoot a 61.
American Angela Stanford, who is aiming for her sixth LPGA Tour win, remained in second place with a third-round 64.
Stanford is 19-under-par 194, one shot ahead of Scotland's Catriona Matthew, who shot 68 and fell into third place at 18-under.
Meena Lee (65) is alone in fourth at 17-under, while Swede Anna Nordqvist (67) rounds out the top five at 15-under.
World No. 1 Park In-bee, the winner of the last three LPGA events, shot 68.
Stenson holds off Mickelson
Henrik Stenson kept a resurgent Phil Mickelson at arm's length at the Scottish Open by shooting a 6-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round Saturday.
Mickelson was in a group of four players in a tie for second after making six birdies in his last 11 holes for a 66, leaving the American talking up his improving links game ahead of next week's British Open.
Branden Grace and first-round leader John Parry were in that group with Mickelson after two more 66s, with unheralded Dane J.B. Hansen (69) making up the quartet.
Stenson, on 16 under par, has emerged from a prolonged slump and is showing the kind of consistent form that took the Swede to No. 4 in 2009. — Agencies
