WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, West Virginia — Matt Every's bogey-free 62 catapulted the American to the second-round lead in the US PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic Friday, but Phil Mickelson missed the cut. Every rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt at his final hole, the par-four ninth, for a 36-hole total of nine-under par 131 on the Old White TPC course. But four-time major champion Mickelson had a disappointing return to action in his first tournament since a heartbreaking sixth runner-up finish at the US Open at Merion. He shot 68 Friday, but that wasn't enough to overcome his first-round 74, so he will not be among the 80 players who made the halfway cut at one-under 139. In second place, one stroke behind Every, were Australian Steven Bowditch and Americans Daniel Summerhays, Bill Lunde, Russell Henley and Johnson Wagner. Henley carded a 65, Lunde posted a 66, both Bowditch and Summerhays shot 67 and Wagner, who had posted a 62 on Thursday to share the overnight lead with Tommy Gainey, carded a 70. McDowell, Sterne share lead Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland shot a 1-under 70 Saturday to share the lead with Richard Sterne of South Africa after the third round of the French Open. McDowell made two birdies and a lone bogey on the tough Albatross course of Le Golf National to sit at 5-under 208 while Sterne was less consistent, offsetting two bogeys and a double bogey with four birdies for a 71. Bernd Wiesberger of Austria (68) shared third place with David Howell of England (69) and Richard Green of Australia (70), one stroke back. Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark was tied with Simon Dyson of England for sixth at 3 under. Francesco Molinari of Italy had the best round of the day with a 67 to climb into 16th place, four shots back, and give himself an outside chance Sunday. Overnight leader Fabrizio Zanotti of Paraguay had a 78 to slip to 27th, while Thomas Bjorn of Denmark held a two-shot lead after a birdie on the par-3 No. 8 before dropping four shots in the last four holes to fall to eighth place. — Agencies
