JEDDAH — Jeddah United and Jaguars claimed the top prizes in different categories at a girls' basketball tournament held under the banner “No to Sports Fanaticism” here Thursday. Jeddah United Sports Co. in partnership with Saudi Gazette organized the one-day tournament in an attempt to encourage positive spirit within the sports community besides confronting certain hostile attitudes in competitive sports in the Saudi society. “As we try to build our sports infrastructure, we hope to address sportsmanship and combat sports fanaticism besides laying a solid foundation for girls' and women's sports,” said Lina Almaeena, co-founder of Jeddah United Sports Co. and head of the organizing committee. Fifteen teams representing schools, universities and private teams participated in the tournament. Among them were: Dar Alhanan, Jeddah Knowledge, Effat University, CBA, Batterjee Medical College, Jeddah United, Jaguars, Golds Gym and Blue Sharks. While the Jeddah United team won the junior crown, the Jaguars claimed the title in the higher category. Medals were also distributed among the participants. Referees for the tournament were: Sherry Naseef, Eman Falatah, Nayla Filimban, Taqiya Yaseen, Maaly Alabdali, Mona Alothman and Yasmin Ashram. — SG
