Saudi Arabia backs political solution to Libya conflict
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 07 - 2020

Saudi Arabia has affirmed its support to international efforts aimed at finding a political solution to the conflict in Libya, focusing on the security and integrity of of Libyan territories and putting an end to foreign interference in Libya's affairs.
The Kingdom also reiterated that it welcomed the Egyptian initiative that sought to achieve a political solution and stop fighting and bloodshed, calling on all Libyan parties to cooperate to find an acceptable solution and a political settlement that restores security and stability to Libya.
This came in the speech delivered by the acting permanent delegate to the United Nations, Dr. Khaled Bin Mohammed Manzlawi, during the UN Security Council's virtual meeting on Tuesday.
Dr. Manzlawi said the Kingdom shares the international community and the Security Council's stance regarding the need to take effective and decisive measures, to defuse tensions, maintain security and stability, and reach quick political solutions to the protracted crises in the region.
He said the kingdom supports the important role played by the United Nations in promoting mediation efforts and diplomacy to resolve the region's conflicts by peaceful means.
"The Security Council bears a historical and legal responsibility toward implementing its decisions related to the settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict and establishment of the Palestinian state, through commitment to implementing international law, the United Nations Charter and international legitimacy resolutions," Dr. Manzlawi said.
He urged the international community to stand firmly against provocative policies of the Israeli occupation authorities in the occupied Palestinian territories and disrespected Security Council resolutions.
He said Saudi Arabia stresses that any solution to the conflict should be based on a two-state theory and in accordance with UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002, which guarantee the establishment of the Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967 and its capital, Al Quds Al Sharif, the return of refugees, and the end of its occupation of all the Arab lands, including the Syrian Golan and Lebanese territories.
"Saudi Arabia appreciates the Council's condemnation of the brutal terrorist attacks by Houthi militia on civilians and civilian sites in the kingdom and condemns its continued threat to the lives of civilians," he said. — Agencies
