ABU DHABI — A shoplifter caught stealing from a supermarket tried to swallow fake notes after he was busted, Abu Dhabi police officials said. According to the security officers at the supermarket, which is in a large shopping mall in the capital, the 36-year-old man was spotted on CCTV as he was shoving unpaid items into his pockets, yahoo.com reported. The police said the suspect stole sweets, juices and cigarettes and other items worth about Dhs165. Officers said the man tried to swallow a number of Dhs100 bills as they led him to a private room. They said security staff forced him to spit out the notes before he could swallow them. Police confirmed the notes were forgeries. Borshid added, detectives found a huge amount of fake Dhs100 notes when they searched the suspect's house. Police said he admitted shoplifting and forging notes using a scanner with a 22-year-old friend. Cops said the accused tried to swallow the dodgy notes to avoid being charged with forgery. The suspect and his friend have been referred to the Public Prosecution. — SG
