Ahmad Abdullah Okaz/Saudi Gazette JUBAIL — Six foreign workers died in a fire at an environmental company's industrial waste disposal plant in Jubail on Saturday. The fire broke out at 10.35 a.m. when the workers were doing maintenance and welding jobs at the Environmental Development Company's (EDCO) plant in Jubail Industrial City 2, the Saudi Press Agency reported. In a statement to SPA, Abdullah Al-Abdul Qader, spokesman of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, said the fire was brought under total control. “An investigation is under way to find out what caused the fire,” he added. The fire, in all likelihood, could have been sparked from area where the welding was being done. The blaze instantly spread to a nearby tank containing benzene and diesel mixture at the plant. The fire continued to spread and engulfed a second tank that was adjacent to the burning first tank, the Civil Defense sources said. They said five Civil Defense members were injured while trying to bring the fire under control. All six died instantly. On receiving information about the fire, the Royal Commission, security agencies and Civil Defense mobilized all resources and to extinguish the fire, they said.
