MAKKAH – The Aziziah municipality in Makkah intensified its field inspection tours and supervision of markets and stores selling foodstuffs in order to guarantee a healthy Haj. Turki Izzat, head of the municipality, said supervisors are focusing their efforts on restaurants and butcheries through surprise visits, which have resulted in the confiscation of 570 kg of rotten meat, 750 packs of different kinds of food items and meat from an unidentified source. Regarding hawkers, Izzat said there is a special committee for monitoring hawkers. The committee comprises representatives of several government agencies. It targets street vendors, arrests them and hands them over to the concerned authorities. He stressed that the municipality will not hesitate to take the necessary measures for creating a safe and healthy atmosphere for pilgrims and removing anything that might pose a hazard to general health.
