According to media reports, Saudi Arabia has announced three billion riyals in aid to its neighbor Yemen for developmental works. At a time when the world is passing through one of its worst economic and financial crises, the Saudi government has set a great example for others. Yemen is struggling to overcome an alarming humanitarian crisis with more than half of its population living in poverty. Due to poverty and unemployment, militancy is growing very rapidly in the country. In a recent national day celebration hundreds of people lost their lives in a revenge suicide attack. The reality is that poverty, hunger and unemployment are the main cause of terrorism in different parts of the world. Most countries which are affected by terrorism do not have enough resources to provide a better standard of living, employment opportunities and the basic necessities of life to their people. This is the main reason that countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen have become breeding grounds for militancy. Due to poverty and unemployment, terrorist organizations find it possible to enlist new recruits and use them for their devious purposes. Past experience has proved that we cannot control militancy through the use of military power, air strikes and the killing of large numbers of people. Financial assistance and employment opportunities can provide better results in the fight against terrorism and militancy. Khawaja Umer Farooq, Jeddah
