Getz helps Royals hold on to edge Tigers 3-2
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 04 - 05 - 2012

Chris Getz's infield single in the ninth inning put Kansas City ahead, and the Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Wednesday.
Joaquin Benoit (0-1) gave up a double to Mike Moustakas, who advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Getz hit a grounder that was too deep into the hole for shortstop Jhonny Peralta to make a strong enough throw.
Tim Collins (1-0) got Prince Fielder to fly out to the warning track in left and struck out Ryan Raburn in the eighth for the victory after Detroit tied the game on Brennan Boesch's two-run homer.
Kansas City finished a 4-3 trip and starts a homestand Thursday night against the New York Yankees. Detroit, which hasn't won back-to-back games in two weeks, has fallen to .500 after a 9-3 start.
Rays 5, Mariners 4: Sean Rodriguez and Luke Scott homered for Tampa Bay, helping Rays right-hander James Shields become the AL's first five-game winner with a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
Shields (5-0) allowed four runs and five hits, walked four and struck out 11 over six innings to win his sixth straight decision over two seasons – matching the longest winning streak of his career. Kyle Seager homered twice off the 2011 All-Star, driving in all of Seattle's runs. Rodriguez hit a two-run homer off Blake Beavan (1-4) in the third. Scott's solo shot off the Seattle starter glanced off centerfielder Michael Saunders' glove before clearing the wall to snap a 4-4 tie in the sixth.
Orioles 5, Yankees 0: Jake Arrieta pitched eight innings of five-hit ball, and the Baltimore Orioles ended Ivan Nova's 15-game winning streak with a 5-0 victory over the New York Yankees.
Athletics 4, Red Sox 2: Brandon McCarthy beat an AL East opponent once again, holding Boston to one run over 6 2-/3 innings as the Oakland Athletics defeated the Red Sox 4-2.
Indians 6, White sox 3: Carlos Santana and Travis Hafner homered to lead the Cleveland Indians to win over the Chicago White Sox.
In other games, Toronto Blue Jays defeated Texas Rangers 11-5 and LA Angels beat Minnesota Twins 9-0.
