Rodriguez keeps A's close to top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 08 - 2010

Sean Rodriguez hit a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eighth as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Oakland Athletics 5-4 Saturday to stay only a game off the lead in the American League.
Evan Longoria hit a home run and Ben Zobrist and Willy Aybar also drove in runs for the Rays, who ended a four-game losing streak to the A's.
Mark Ellis had two hits and drove in two runs for Oakland, which had a four-game winning streak end.
Rays reliever Randy Choate (3-3) pitched a perfect seventh for the win while Rafael Soriano worked the ninth for his 36th save. Oakland's Craig Breslow (4-4) took the loss after giving up Rodriguez's homer.
Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4, 11 innings: In Boston, Jed Lowrie homered to lead off the 11th inning, lifting Boston over Toronto.
Lowrie, who dropped an easy pop up in the top of the inning, homered into the Red Sox bullpen off Casey Janssen (4-2).
Boston catcher Victor Martinez drove in three runs to go along with a solid defensive play on a jarring collision, holding onto a throw to home plate as Lyle Overbay knocked him over for the final out of the fourth.
Overbay had a game-tying, two-run homer for Toronto after going 4-for-5 with a career-best seven RBIs in Friday's win.
Boston's Jonathan Papelbon (5-5) pitched a perfect inning for the win.
Angels 9, Twins 3: In Minneapolis, Peter Bourjos hit his first major league home run and added a triple and four RBIs to lead Los Angeles over Minnesota.
The speedy center fielder also threw out Jason Kubel at home plate in his best day since being promoted from the minors on Aug. 3.
Kevin Slowey (11-6) lasted just three innings for the Twins, allowing four runs before leaving with discomfort in his right triceps.
Angels' Francisco Rodriguez (1-3) allowed one hit in 2 2-3 innings of relief for the win.
Yankees 9, Mariners 5: In New York, Eduardo Nunez drove in the go-ahead run with his first career hit in the seventh inning and New York went on to beat Seattle.
Nunez got the start in place of Alex Rodriguez, who was placed on the disabled list with a lingering left calf injury. Not that it has mattered much this season – the Yankees improved to 11-0 when he doesn't play, according to STATS LLC.
New York's bullpen patched together six stellar innings, with Boone Logan (1-0) taking the win.
Seattle starter Jason Vargas (9-6) took the loss.
Royals 6, White Sox 5, 11 innings (1st game); White Sox 7, Royals 6, 10 innings (2nd game): In Kansas City, Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, then delivered a two-out single in the 11th that gave Kansas City victory over Chicago in the first game of a doubleheader.
In the second game, Juan Pierre's two-out RBI double in the 10th lifted the White Sox to their own extra-inning victory.
Gordon Beckman led off the 10th inning with a single, advanced to second on Ramon Castro's sacrifice bunt and scored the game-winning run on Pierre's double to right.
Orioles 8, Rangers 6: In Baltimore, rookie Josh Bell hit his first two major league home runs, part of an unprecedented long-ball barrage that carried Baltimore past slumping Texas.
Rangers starter Cliff Lee (10-7) gave up four homers in a game for the first time in his career. He has given up 13 home runs this season – seven against lowly Baltimore.
Tigers 5, Indians 2: In Detroit, Max Scherzer pitched Detroit to victory over Cleveland.
