Waikato Chiefs remain on top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 30 - 04 - 2012

scoring hero in prop Sona Taumalolo, the Waikato Chiefs beat the Wellington Hurricanes 33-14 for their eighth straight win in rugby's Super 15 to stay atop the table after 10 rounds.
Taumalolo continued to outshine All Blacks backline stars such as Sonny Bill Williams and Richard Kahui by remaining the Chiefs' leading tryscorer with seven from nine matches.
He scored the second of their three tries Saturday to extend a Chiefs' winning streak which stretches back to the first weekend of the season.
South Africa's Stormers beat the Western Force 17-3 to cap a successful road trip, staying atop the South African conference and in second place on the overall table, two points behind the Chiefs.
Canterbury wins
In Sydney, center Robbie Fruean tiptoed along the sideline for the final 20m to score his second try of the match and lead the Canterbury Crusaders to a 37-33 win over the New South Wales Waratahs in Super 15 rugby also Sunday.
Fruean scored two tries in three minutes last March at Nelson, New Zealand to also lead the Crusaders to victory over the Waratahs in a match moved from their home ground at Christchurch due to the deadly February 2011 earthquake two weeks earlier.
The Waratahs pulled to within four points with five minutes left Sunday, but a costly turnover at a lineout gave the Crusaders the ball and the New Zealanders held on for the victory. It was Canterbury's sixth win in nine matches, and its 10th in a row over the Waratahs.
Japan wins opener
In Tikyo, defending champion Japan demolished Kazakhstan 87-0 in their Asian Five Nations opener to maintain its perfect record in the competition.
The other match in the first round of games in the fifth edition of the continental showpiece saw Hong Kong romp to a convincing 85-10 victory over the United Arab Emirates in Dubai Friday.
Japan scored 13 tries and showed glimpses of the high-speed rugby new coach Eddie Jones wants his side to play as they recorded their 17th straight victory in the competition Saturday.
Hong Kong, which ran in 14 tries, recorded its biggest margin of victory in the Asian Five Nations. Winger Rowan Varty grabbed four tries, while inside center Ally Maclay scored a hat trick.
