Morne Steyn kicked 26 points as the Bulls beat ACT Brumbies 36-34 in the Super 15 Saturday despite being outscored five tries to two. Steyn landed eight from 10 placekicks and a dropped goal at Loftus Versfeld as the Bulls only just held on against former Springboks coach Jake White's new team. ACT scored two early tries in three minutes through winger Henry Speight and fullback Jesse Mogg to raise hopes of a winning return to South Africa for White. But Steyn's boot was the difference as the Bulls opened a 33-13 lead after 60 minutes. Bjorn Basson and flanker CJ Stander went over for the home team. ACT launched a stirring late charge that earned them two bonus points when center Andrew Smith and replacements Ian Prior and Anthony Hegarty touched down. In Durban, replacement scrumhalf Augustine Pulu scored a try after the final hooter to cap an 18-12 win for Waikato Chiefs over the Sharks. Pulu's dart down the blindside in the 81st minute made certain of Waikato's seventh straight win, taking the New Zealand team back to the top of the overall standings with one more week-nine fixture to be played. Flyhalf Aaron Cruden's 13 points had kept the visitors ahead from the moment he crossed for a try in the 19th. He also kicked the conversion and two penalties. The Sharks closed to within a point at 13-12 with Patrick Lambie's fourth penalty in the 67th, but the Springboks back missed a long-range attempt with 10 minutes to go and the Chiefs closed out victory. In Sydney, the New South Wales Waratahs moved into first place in the Australian conference with a 30-21 win over Melbourne, leaving the Rebels languishing in last place with only two wins in eight matches. Bernard Foley, Rob Horne and Tatafu Polota-Nau scored tries for New South Wales and Brendan McKibbin added three conversions and three penalties for the Waratahs. Tim Davidson, Lachlan Mitchell and Ged Robinson scored Rebels tries. In Wellington, All Blacks star Dan Carter marked his 100th match for the Canterbury Crusaders with a try as the seven-time champion beat the Wellington Hurricanes 42-14. The 30-year-old Carter made his milestone appearance at inside center rather than in his usual position at flyhalf, but was still influential in a match which mirrored his first for the Crusaders nine years ago.
