Wellington Hurricanes flyhalf Aaron Cruden ensured his side's Super 14 slim playoff hopes remained alive with a 33-31 victory over the Otago Highlanders in Dunedin Saturday. Cruden scored a try and slotted three conversions while he had a hand in three more of the visitors' five tries - four of which were scored in the first half. Like other matches in New Zealand and Australia this weekend, Sunday's 95th anniversary of the First World War landings of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli was commemorated, with both sides standing silently while the Ode of Remembrance was read and the Last Post played before kickoff. The victory moved the Hurricanes up to sixth with 27 points. Waratahs beat Brumbies Wallabies winger Lachan Turner scored the only try of the match off Berrick Barnes' kick to give the New South Wales Waratahs a 19-12 win over the ACT Brumbies in the Super 14 Saturday. The win moved the Waratahs into fifth place and a point outside a semifinal spot with three rounds left. The Brumbies picked up a bonus point but their playoff chances are fading, dropping seven points behind the leading four. The Waratahs went ahead 12-9 after a 47th-minute penalty to flyhalf Daniel Halangahu before Turner scored his fifth try of the season and 20th in Super rugby. Sharks remain alive In Durban, the Sharks beat the Auckland Blues 23-10 Saturday to keep alive slim hopes of a semifinal place. Sharks scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar scored a try, two penalties and a drop goal. The home team added a second-half penalty from No. 10 Andy Goode and two from replacement Rory Kockott. Bulls on top In Pretoria, Springboks flyhalf Morne Steyn inspired the defending champions Bulls back to the top of the Super 14 standings with 26 points in Saturday's 51-11 win over local rivals, the Lions. Steyn scored the fourth of six Bulls tries and landed eight from 10 kicks. His first successful kick made him South Africa's highest pointscorer in Super rugby, overtaking former Lions flyhalf Andre Pretorius' 645 points.
