A total of SR100 million has been allocated for lowering the levels of groundwater and surface water in Braiman, Quwaizah, Kilo 11, Kilo 14, Al-Maqbouli and Al-Olayya districts in Jeddah. It is hoped this will bring an end to the foul odor and stagnant pools of water which have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Abdullah Ali Al-Assaf, Manager of the Works Unit in the National Water Company (NWC), revealed that contracts will be tendered for extending networks for lowering the water table at six locations while Al-Ajaweed, Al-Sanabil, Jawharat Al-Ma'aridh, Al-Ajwad, Al-Samer and Al-Naseem districts will be offered for public bids. “The consultant is currently studying the situation in five other locations including Obeid Planned District, Al-Musa'ed, Al-Rayah, Al-Raghamah and Al-Waha districts. The study is expected to be completed at the end of the current week. After that tenders will be invited and then contracts will be tendered, as is the procedure,” Al-Assaf said. He revealed that the sanitary drainage network projects are progressing according to plan. He said at present work is going on in the home connections in the central northern parts of Jeddah after completion of the main and subsidiary lines in the area. Al-Assaf also insisted that there is tight supervision of sewage tanker trucks roaming Jeddah's streets.
