Saudi Gazette A fire broke out in a Saudi family's house in Jeddah last Friday, and a group of young men from the neighborhood helped the civil defense crew rescue each member of the family to safety, The Director General of Civil Defense, General Saad Bin Abdullah Al-Tuwaijri, while talking to the press, said, “Such bright examples of bravery and selflessness from our youth in this blessed country do not come as a surprise to me. Saudi men have long been known for their nobility, courage, and willingness to extend a helping hand to those in need. Such heroic volunteer acts truly reflect the culture and traditions of Saudi society that spring forth from the Islamic teachings that encourage Muslims to alleviate the suffering of others, ease others' pain, and help the distraught. Each member of society plays a role in the protection of other Muslim's five essential rights, which includes a Muslim's money, property, and honor.” It was their humanity which drove them to save the lives of the family members staking of their own life, without thinking once of any material reward. “Although these men sought no personal gain or recognition, the civil defense plans to express its appreciation for their heroic efforts. We are planning in the immediate future to organize an event to celebrate their courageous service to the community and to honor them for their exemplary volunteer work,” said Al-Tuwaijri. The message from the civil defense to the general public is that each person is a rescuer, life saver, and a member of the civil defense team when the need arises. Protecting the lives and properties of the country's people should be the goal of every individual. The civil defense department welcomes young men and women who wish to volunteer and receive training in basic first-aid, evacuation, and safety measures in the case of emergencies and accidents. __
