Astros soar on Gurriel's first gland slam homer
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 05 - 2017

Yuli Gurriel hit his first career grand slam, leading the Houston Astros to a 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday night at Marlins Park. With Houston trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Gurriel hit his two-out blast to left-center on a 2-1 pitch from reliever Junichi Tazawa (1-1).
Houston had loaded the bases against Tazawa with a Josh Reddick double, a Carlos Correa walk and an Evan Gattis hit-by-pitch.
The Astros, who have the best record in baseball at 27-12, sent the Marlins to their 15th loss in the past 19 games. Joe Musgrove (3-3) earned his second consecutive win, allowing eight hits and one walk but just one run in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five.
Indians 8, Rays 7
Lonnie Chisenhall and Francisco Lindor hit home runs, leading Cleveland to a win over Tampa Bay. Indians starter Carlos Carrasco was removed from the game in the fourth inning with left pectoral tightness. Five Cleveland relievers combined to pitch the last 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and five hits with six strikeouts.
Cleveland left-hander Andrew Miller yielded a run for the first time this year, snapping his streak of 15 shutout appearances and 17 1/3 scoreless innings to start the season. Logan Morrison's eighth-inning sacrifice fly off Miller cut the Indians' lead to 7-6.
Braves 10, Blue Jays 6
Freddie Freeman hit a three-run homer, Nick Markakis had three RBIs, and Bartolo Colon won for the first time since April 16 as Atlanta defeated Toronto. Matt Kemp had four hits and a walk and scored three runs for the Braves. Colon allowed three runs (two earned) in five innings.
Toronto's Justin Smoak hit his eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot off Josh Collmenter with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Diamondbacks 7, Mets 3
Yasmany Tomas hit a three-run home run, and Arizona broke open a tie game with a six-run eighth inning in a win over slumping New York. Jeff Mathis hit a two-run home run and pinch hitter Daniel Descalso added a solo shot in the eighth to go with Tomas's blast. Arizona ended a brief two-game losing streak and sent the Mets to their fifth straight loss.
Angels 5, White Sox 3
Kole Calhoun hit the first of three home runs by Los Angeles in a win over Chicago at Angel Stadium. Calhoun's three-run homer erased a 3-0 deficit in the fifth inning, tying the game for the moment. The next batter, Mike Trout, snapped the tie with a homer of his own.
Martin Maldonado homered in the seventh inning to stretch the Angels' lead in support of Jesse Chavez, who gave up three runs and five hits in seven-plus innings.
Mariners 6, Athletics 5
Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager each hit two-run homers as Seattle defeated Oakland at Safeco Field. Seattle snapped a four-game losing streak and sent the A's to their fourth straight defeat, but not without some tense moments in the ninth inning.
Mariners closer Edwin Diaz, who surrendered a solo homer to Toronto's Kevin Pillar in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss Sunday, failed to get the save in the ninth, walking four straight batters with one out. Oakland added another run on a groundout before Tony Zych notched his first major league save.
Giants 8, Dodgers 4
Matt Cain pitched effectively into the seventh inning, and San Francisco supported him with a four-run fourth inning, leading to a victory over Los Angeles in the opener of a three-game series. Eduardo Nunez drove in three runs, two with an infield hit in the big fourth inning, and Buster Posey belted a solo home run, propelling the Giants to their fourth straight win.
Cain (3-1) gave up one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five. Along the way, the 32-year-old pitched his 2,000th career inning, becoming the 12th player in Giants franchise history to reach the milestone.
Padres 6, Brewers 5 (10 innings)
Rookie Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th to give San Diego a win over Milwaukee. Erick Aybar opened the 10th with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Renfroe lined full-count fastball from Brewers reliever Oliver Drake (2-1) into the left field seats.
Former Padres farmhand Eric Sogard homered with one out in the top of the 10th to give the Brewers a 5-4 lead. San Diego reliever Jose Torres (2-2) picked up the win despite allowing the Sogard homer. — Reuters
