Many people proficient in the Hindi language marked the Hindi Diwas (Day) at the Indian Consulate premises here recently, with winners emerging from an essay competition and a quiz contest. The function to celebrate the Hindi Diwas saw the participation of all the officers/officials. Every year Hindi Diwas is organized on Sept. 14 to mark the adoption of Hindi language as official language of India. On Sept. 14, 1949, the Indian Parliament adopted a resolution to promote Hindi as an official language and means of communication among different language spoken by people of the country. The function, which was inaugurated by Consul General Md. Noor Rahman Sheikh, was anchored by Deputy Consul General/Consul (Haj/HOC) Md. Shahid Alam and attended by consuls and officials of the Consulate. The consul general in his speech emphasized on the importance of having Hindi as the official language and also elaborated on how it has contributed towards unity of the country. In his welcome speech the deputy consul general talked about Hindi literature and its utility in daily life. An essay competition titled "How to promote Hindi in Saudi Arabia" was organized for officials of the Consulate. Besides a quiz test on the knowledge of Hindi literature was organized during the function. The winners of both the competitions were given prizes and certificates. — SG
