Abdul Latif Jameel (ALJ) Company, the exclusive distributor of Toyota automobiles in the Kingdom, is holding a press conference Friday to address issues concerning cruise control in Toyota cars and questions raised about ALJ's liability in media reports. A recent incident of a Toyota Land Cruiser's cruise control malfunctioning on the Riyadh-Haf Al-Batin highway attracted public attention and also raised questions about the high price of Toyota's cars and their auto parts. Some Saudis have called for the company's boycott on Facebook. Dr. Saad Atiyyah Al-Ghamdi, Deputy President of ALJ, said the press conference would discuss what has been published in the media recently on this subject. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has said that car dealers will be responsible for any defect in the functioning of the vehicles not meeting the Saudi and international standards. The ministry said it has carefully followed up reports of cruise control malfunctions which could have resulted in tragic accident. Manufacturers and local agents must report any malfunction in the vehicle as per respective regulations, the ministry said. The ministry has requested all car dealers in the Kingdom to comply with regulations, provide causes of malfunctions and outline the steps to be taken to deal with such malfunctions.
