Harbi Okaz/Saudi Gazette RIYADH/JEDDAH – On Thursday, Dr. Tawfiq Bin Fawzan Al-Rabeah, Minister of Commerce and Industry, called upon the Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry to monitor commodity prices in the market, so they remain affordable for the people. During a meeting with Abdul Rahman Al-Jeraisi, Chairman of Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), the minister said the Chambers should carry out their functions at the highest level and that this was in the interest of the nation and in implementation of the ministry's directives and regulations. Al-Jeraisi told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that everything that concerns the consumer was discussed during the meeting such as making sure commodities imported from abroad are in conformity with the standards and specifications besides being abundant in quantity. This means commodities should be secured for consumers and there should not be any scarcity whatsoever. The prices in the local market must be monitored, so they are kept at a suitable level and remain affordable to all, especially for the consumer goods. Al-Jeraisi said it is the Chamber's concern to serve the consumers. He said they would discuss the means that the ministry sees is best for serving citizens. Meanwhile, Saleh Kamel, Chairman of Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), demanded that the ministry takes strong measures against those who tamper with the prices and supply of consumer goods. He suggested imposition of fines, defamation and closure of businesses, as possible solutions to the problem. __
