Playing without its top quarterback and running back, Auburn still managed to overpower Virginia, 43-24, Saturday night at the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta. Auburn was without running back Mike Dyer, who was suspended for an undisclosed rules violation. Quarterback Clint Moseley left with an ankle injury early in the first quarter. Onterio McCalebb, who said last week that he wanted to “show everybody I can do it all,” rushed for 109 yards and scored 2 touchdowns in place of Dyer. Tre Mason added 64 yards rushing, including a 22-yard scoring run. Barrett Trotter passed for 175 yards and a touchdown while sharing time with Kiehl Frazier, who ran for 2 touchdowns for Auburn (8-5). Kris Burd caught two touchdown passes for Virginia (8-5). Sun Bowl John White scored on an 8-yard run in overtime to lift Utah past Georgia Tech, 30-27, in El Paso. Justin Moore kicked a 34-yard field goal in Georgia Tech's overtime possession for a 3-point lead, but White finished a 115-yard rushing day by scoring the winning touchdown on his 26th carry. The Utes (8-5) tied it in regulation when Jon Hays hit DeVonte Christopher with a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-14 with 1 minute 32 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Yellow Jackets (8-5) drove to the Utah 31 with two seconds left, but David Scully missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt. Liberty Bowl Isaiah Pead ran for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Ralph David Abernathy IV's 90-yard kickoff return early in the fourth quarter put Cincinnati ahead to stay in a 31-24 victory over Vanderbilt in Memphis. Abernathy is the grandson of the civil rights leader who was in Memphis with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he was assassinated in 1968. The Bearcats (10-3) won their third straight. Vanderbilt finished with a 6-7 record. Meineke Car Car Bowl Ryan Tannehill threw for 329 yards and a touchdown as Texas A&M earned a 33-22 win over Northwestern in Houston. Ben Malena rushed for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Aggies (7-6), who snapped a five-game bowl losing streak. Northwestern has not won a bowl game, losing nine, since the 1949 Rose Bowl. Dan Persa passed for 213 yards for the Wildcats (6-7). Persa set an NCAA record for career completion percentage (73.6) by going 25 of 37 to end his career 460 of 633. Fight Hunger Bowl Illinois held off UCLA, 20-14, in San Francisco to earn its first victory since a 41-20 win at Indiana 12 weeks ago. Terry Hawthorne returned an interception 39 yards for the Illini's first touchdown late in the third quarter. Nathan Scheelhaase added a 60-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Jenkins midway through the fourth quarter for Illinois (7-6), which snapped a six-game losing streak. UCLA (6-8) was held to 18 yards rushing in its third straight loss. Along with Holt, the Huskies fired the linebackers coach Mike Cox and the safeties coach Jeff Mills. Coach Steve Sarkisian announced the firings.
