JEDDAH — The municipality has allocated a 4.62 million sq. meter plot of land in south Jeddah close to Bahra District for the construction of a new car junkyard. Municipality spokesman Mohammed Al-Baqami said the project has already been offered for tender. "This will be a new and independent site and will not cancel the other junkyard project in north Jeddah," he said. The municipality is currently constructing a new car junkyard in Asfan in the north of Jeddah and has asked all the current junkyards in the city to move there. Baqami said the municipality made it a condition on the bidding contractors to take notice of the valleys and the rainwater logs in the area to avoid floods. "With its tender papers, the municipality has attached copies of the topographical studies conducted by the geological survey department," he explained. The spokesman said the municipality has opened the project for the national and foreign investors excluding those who have not yet settled their financial arrears. He said investment in the project will continue for 15 years and asked the contractors to attach certificates proving their experiences with their price quotations. "The municipality will keep a close watch on the project during all the stages of its implementation and the contractors should submit a comprehensive engineering report proving that the project is safe and sound and that it has been accomplished according to specifications," he said. The spokesman explained that a SR500 fine will be imposed on the contractor for each day of delay and said the contractor should asphalt and light all the roads of the project. He said the site will include eight parks on an area of 91,687 sq. meters and eight mosques.
