Saudi Gazette MANILA — With Jeff Chan catching fire when they most needed it, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters turned back the Barangay Ginebra Kings, 94-86, on Sunday night in the PBA Philippine Cup. Chan banged in a team-high 19 points, 14 of them in a scintillating fourth quarter show, as the Painters nailed their third straight win and sixth overall against a single loss, thus joining the Alaska Aces and San Miguel Beermen at the top of the standings. Ginebra suffered its fourth loss in eight games and tumbled two notches down to seventh place. Chan had plenty of support with Jericho Cruz posting 16 points and rookie Maverick Ahanmisi scoring 13. Beau Belga added nine while Gabe Norwood chipped in eight markers. But it was Chan who really hurt the Kings the most. After sitting out the entire third quarter, a fresh Chan was finally unleashed by ROS coach Yeng Guiao in the fourth, and the sharpshooter delivered as expected. He quickly scored seven points in a row to keep ROS' double-digit lead, 77-63. The Kings answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to seven, 82-75. But Chan responded with back-to-back baskets. The Kings kept coming back, but Chan finally sealed the win for ROS with a three-point play, giving his team a 94-84 with about 41 seconds left. Japeth Aguilar this led Ginebra with 22 points and nine rebounds while Greg Slaughter had 19 and seven. GlobalPort 120, Blackwater 105 The GlobalPort Batang Pier once again relied on their one-two backcourt punch—Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle—to overwhelm the Blackwater Elite, 120-105, thus snapping a two-game losing skid. The 120 points scored in regulation time was GlobalPort's highest scoring output in franchise history. The Batang Pier thus improved to a 4-3 win-loss card, moving up to solo fifth in the standings. Blackwater absorbed its sixth loss in seven games to stay at second to last place, half a game ahead of tail-ender Meralco (1-7). Romeo scored a team-high 26 points on 9-of-21 shooting in just 26 minutes while Pringle posted 17 markers, six boards, and six assists. Doug Kramer provided the strength in the paint for GlobalPort, registering a double-double 16 points and 15 rebounds. The Batang Pier victory spoiled the superlative performance of Blackwater's Carlo Lastimosa who shattered his career-high points in the first half alone, finishing with 31 points. JP Erram added nine points, 14 boards, seven blocks, and two steals in a gallant but losing effort for Blackwater. Games Wednesday: GlobalPort Batang Pier (4-3) vs. NLEX Road Warriors (4-3) and Mahindra Enforcers (2-5) vs. San Miguel Beermen (6-1).
