MANILA — The Barangay Ginebra Kings eked out a down-the-wire 111-108 overtime victory over the GlobalPort Batang Pier Wednesday night in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Mall of Asia Arena. Import Orlando Johnson led the way with 34 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as the Kings improved to a 3-4 win-loss card, good for solo eighth place in the standings. Japeth Aguilar was the biggest local scorer for Ginebra with 18 points on top of 13 boards. Jayjay Helterbrand added 13 points, while Mark Caguioa and LA Tenorio chipped in with 12 apiece. New Asian import Jiwan Kim from South Korea debuted with 11 points for the Kings. Greg Slaughter posted seven points and 10 rebounds. GlobalPort Asian import Omar Krayem from Palestine forced the overtime period when he nailed a three-pointer with five ticks left to tie the game at 101-all. Krayem again hit a triple with 24.7 seconds left in the overtime period to cut Ginebra's lead to 108-107. But Caguioa scored on an easy one-hander and then Aguilar hit two free throws as the Kings escaped with a hard-fought victory. Import Jared Famous led GlobalPort with 39 points and 28 rebounds. Krayem added 19 points while Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle added 18 and 12 points, respectively. GlobalPort suffered its third loss in seven games, tying the Meralco Bolts at fifth to sixth place in the rankings. Rain or Shine 123, Blackwater 85 On survival mode, the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters played like merciless warriors to beat the hapless Blackwater Elite black and blue, 123-85, to notch only their second win in six games. The 38-point blowout was the highest winning margin by any team this conference. A team that has been in the playoffs for the last 10 conferences, Rain or Shine now finds itself in danger of getting knock off with only five games left in their elimination round schedule. With the win, the Painters forged a three-way tie for ninth to 11th place with Star and NLEX. Blackwater is at 12th and last place with a 1-6 record. Only the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs. Their long-range bombs hitting their mark, the Painters led from start to finish, erecting a 30-22 lead after the first quarter. Not yet content, ROS stepped on the gas in the second quarter to pull away, 31-13, for a 26-point lead at halftime, 61-35. The Painters extended their lead by as many as 40 points in the fourth quarter before cruising to victory. Import Wendell McKines hardly worked up a sweat to post a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Five local Painters scored in double digits with Jervy Cruz finishing with 11 points, Paul Lee with 13 all in the first quarter, Jeff Chan with 12, TY Tang with 11, and Beau Belga with 10. Three other Painters – Jericho Cruz, Jeric Teng and Raymond Almazan – scored at least eight points in a show of balanced team offense. Marcus Douthit led Blackwater with 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks. The Elite yielded the game even before it ended, benching Douthit, their biggest offensive threat and primary rebounder, in the fourth quarter. Blackwater suffered its biggest blackeye, a defeat worse than its 91-62 loss to the San Miguel Beermen last December. Game Friday: Alaska Aces vs. Kia Carnival; and NLEX Road Warriors vs. San Miguel Beermen.
