Jay R. Gotera Saudi Gazette MANILA — Import Romeo Travis provided the extra firepower and defensive tenacity for the Alaska Aces en route to a 108-99 victory over the crippled Barangay Ginebra Kings Friday night in the PBA Governors Cup. Alaska thus joined GlobalPort at the top of the standings with its second straight win. Travis, a 6'7” power forward who was a college teammate of NBA star Lebron James, scored 34 points, making 13 of 20 shots, while hauling down 16 boards. Dondon Hontiveros and RJ Jazul added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Alaska. Although he has not played in the NBA, Travis proved more than a match to his Ginebra counterpart Orlando Johnson, who had stints with the Indiana Pacers and the Sacramento Kings in the NBA. The 6'5” Johnson poured 50 points for the Kings, but found little local support as three key Ginebra players could not play due to injuries. The Twin Towers of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar together with high-flying Chris Ellis were all saddled with injuries suffered during training. Slaughter was down with right ankle sprain while Aguilar had right hamstring injury. Mark Caguioa was the only double-digit scorer for Ginebra with 11 points. Sol Mercado debuted for Ginebra with eight points and eight assists while Mongolian import Sanchir Tungalag posted eight points in just 13 minutes of action in his PBA debut. The Aces raced to a 14-0 start in the game and led by as much as 21 points. But the Kings cut the lead to just a basket in the second half only to fade away in the endgame. GlobalPort 100, Blackwater 76 The GlobalPort Batang Pier hardly needed their pair of imports in demolishing the lowly Blackwater Elite, 100-76, for their first ever 2-0 win-loss conference start in the league. The Batang Pier thus found themselves at the top of the standings in the company of the Alaska Aces. Terrence Romeo once again led GlobalPort with 20 points. Rookie Stanley Pringle came back from sick bay to pump in 18 points off the bench, including 4 of 6 from beyond the three-point arc, in just 14 minutes of action. Pringle spearheaded a furious GlobalPort rampage in the second quarter to pull away, never to look back. Ronjay Buenafe added 16 markers for GlobalPort, which began the conference with a 92-73 rout of Meralco. Central African import Patrick O'Bryant posted a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. The seven-foot reinforcement who has played in three NBA teams also collected four steals and two blocks in 34 minutes of action. Palestinian import Omar Krayem scored only two points after finishing with 18 points in the game against Meralco. Marcus Douthit was the lone bright spot for Blackwater, posting 24 points, 15 rebounds, seven blocks and four assists. But his efforts were not enough to prevent the Elite from falling to the bottom of the standings with their second straight defeat. Reil Cervantes was the only other Blackwater player to score in double digits with 11 points. Games Saturday: San Miguel Beermen vs. Meralco Bolts and NLEX Road Warriors vs. Purefoods Star Hotshots.
