Saudi Gazette MAKKAH — More than 400,000 poor people in Makkah have benefited from a charitable food distribution program carried out by Al-Bir Charity Society. The program, titled "Preserving Bounties", collects leftover food from wedding parties and other social occasions in hotels, rest houses and restaurants and distributes them to the poor and needy. The society's chairman, Tariq Bin Saleh Jamal, said huge quantities of leftover food that otherwise would have found their way to garbage bins were collected and distributed among the needy people in the holy city last year. He said a philanthropist donated three vans to the organization for the distribution of the food among the poor around the Grand Mosque and in various neighborhoods.
