The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) has announced an integrated plan to preserve the historical character of the old town of Al-Deera. The President of the (SCTA) Prince Sultan Bin Salman said in an interview to Okaz/Saudi Gazette: “We will support all historical, cultural and heritage sites in Al-Ula region to boost its tourism potential.” He made the pledge as he inspected stalls and exhibitions at the First Forum for Urban and National Heritage in Jeddah. The forum is entitled “Urban heritage from extinction to investment”. “The value of the properties in the old town will be fully assessed by the state and expropriated,” Prince Sultan said. “The Al-Ula project is just part of a much larger development plan that will develop the whole governorate,” he added. The prince also lauded the recent opening of Prince Abdul Majeed Bin Abdul Aziz Airport in Al-Ula. The airport works with Saudi Arabian Airlines to encourage cheaper and more regular flights for tourists throughout the region. Al-Ula is world famous for its archaeological and historical sites such as the Madain Saleh, Al-Kheraibah and Al-Mabiyat areas. The old town of Al-Deera which boasts 750 houses and castles built from mud and masonry is highly regarded for its architectural style.
