The International Islamic Relief Organization of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA) has warned about the exacerbation of the difficult humanitarian situation afflicting millions of children in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and other countries in East Africa due to a severe shortage of food and medicines. Dr. Adnan Bin Khalil Basha, IIROSA's Secretary General, said reports from the offices of the organization said that the affected countries are experiencing the greatest humanitarian disaster in the world because of the drought that caused widespread famine. “This suffering is increasing day by day and should be contained by providing food aid as 14 million people — including four million children — are starving,” Basha said. He pointed out that data indicate that 460,000 children suffer from malnutrition in Somalia, 250,000 children are seriously ill while tens of thousands have been killed. Basha called on all regional and international organizations working in the field of human services to provide food aid to save these children who suffer from the spread of many diseases, such as cholera, schistosomiasis, typhoid, meningitis and malaria.
