The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) has prepared an elaborate plan to manage and economically develop the Red Sea coastal areas of the Kingdom. The plan includes a mechanism to coordinate efforts between concerned bodies and allow them to participate in designing and implementing operational plans to protect and develop the nature and environment of the coastal areas without disrupting the environmental equilibrium. The PME will launch campaigns to raise environmental awareness about the importance of protecting the sea and coastal environments and encourage non-governmental efforts in this regard. The PME said classification of coastal areas for different developmental purposes and the determination of critical environmental areas are based on environmental standards. The PME has requested the company in charge of the project to conduct a study to evaluate the Red Sea coastal resources along the areas extending from the northern borders (Haqal) to southern borders (Jizan), about 1,876 km long, and to rehabilitate the affected areas. The study will include land and sea areas, protrusions and bays along the coast. The PME said that a field team was formed to study the environmental elements and focus on critical areas. It also said that field information for all facilities located on the western coast of the Kingdom has been gathered and studies and analyses have been made to classify the material of these facilities and assess their impact on the environment.
