Faisal, Emir of Makkah, was recently briefed by a team of environmental experts on a project to conserve the Red Sea's fish and animal life between Jizan and Al-Laith. The plan is to set up a database of coastal and marine resources to help government agencies, private companies and investors to determine the best way to use the Red Sea environment. The team has carried out five major tasks to identify these areas, including coastal and marine surveillance, identification of areas, collecting marine life and habitat information, collecting ecological data, determining the degree of bio-diversity and other data such as the type of vegetation and water resources. The team has has recommended that some areas be protected because of their huge and diverse resources and natural features. If there is any difficulty in protecting an area, then this should be included in the future plans of the coastal administration and environmental planning. It has also been recommended that there should be periodic surveys of the coastal areas to determine any changes taking place. This data would then also be included in the database.
