Brennan Boesch hit a solo home run off Mike Adams amid an eighth-inning rain shower, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Texas Rangers Tuesday night. Adams (0-1) was making his debut for the Rangers after coming over from San Diego just before the trade deadline. He got the first out of the eighth, but as the rain began falling harder, Boesch lined his 16th homer of the season over the wall in right field. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for Detroit, earning his 29th save in 29 chances. Joaquin Benoit (3-3) blew a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth, allowing a solo homer to Nelson Cruz and a tying two-run shot by Mike Napoli. Alex Avila homered and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who nearly paid the price for not breaking the game open earlier when they put plenty of runners on base against Texas starter Colby Lewis. Lewis allowed five runs — four earned — and 10 hits in four-plus innings. He walked three and struck out three. Max Scherzer allowed two runs and six hits in six innings for Detroit. Reliever David Pauley, acquired over the weekend from Seattle, started the seventh in his first appearance as a Tiger. He allowed a leadoff double but got two outs after that, and Phil Coke came in and retired Josh Hamilton on a weak grounder to end the threat. Cruz started the Texas rally in the eighth with his 24th homer, and after a walk to Mitch Moreland, Napoli tied it with his 16th homer. With the rain suddenly picking up, Boesch broke the tie with one swing. Ian Kinsler nearly brought Texas even again in the ninth, hitting a long foul ball on Valverde's first pitch, but the Rangers couldn't score. Yankees 6, White Sox 0: New York slugger Mark Teixeira hit home runs from both sides of the plate for the 12th game of his career to set a new Major League record in the Yankees' 6-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Teixeira blasted a right-handed two-run homer in the third inning then added a solo blast from the opposite side of the plate in the seventh to launch himself into the record books in a game shortened to 6 1/2 innings because of rain. Blue Jays 3, Rays 1: Ricky Romero and Jon Rauch combined on a three-hitter, Jose Bautista hit his 32nd homer and the Toronto Blue Jays finally beat David Price with a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Orioles 8, Royals 2: Mark Reynolds homered, doubled and drove in five runs as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals in a game in which the temperature at first pitch was 107 degrees.
