Kurt Suzuki hit two of Oakland's four homers as the Athletics showed unusual power in overcoming Boston's 18-hit attack and winning 9-8 in the American League Thursday. The A's entered the game with the third-fewest in the majors, but hit more than two in a game for the first time this season. Suzuki homered in his first two at bats against Tim Wakefield (1-4), a solo shot in the second inning and a two-run homer in the fourth. Then, with Oakland leading 7-5 in the eighth, Jack Cust and Kevin Kouzmanoff hit homers on consecutive pitches. Bill Hall's solo homer in the ninth pulled the Red Sox within a run, but A's closer Andrew Bailey got the last two outs for his 12th save. Mariners 4, Twins 1: In Seattle, Felix Hernandez snapped a personal four-game losing streak, allowing one run over eight innings as Seattle beat AL Central-leading Minnesota. The Mariners' ace just avoided getting drilled in the head by Justin Morneau's liner in the first inning, then settled into a groove. After Morneau's RBI hit, Hernandez (3-4) retired 22 of the final 27 batters he faced. Hernandez even struck out four Twins in the eighth inning after Joe Mauer reached base when a third strike in the dirt bounced away from catcher Rob Johnson. No problem for Hernandez, who got Morneau looking to end the inning and add to his strikeout total. Jose Lopez hit a three-run homer for Seattle. Twins starter Carl Pavano (5-6) was the loser. White Sox 4, Rangers 3: In Chicago, Carlos Quentin, booed after committing an error that led to a Texas run, atoned with a two-run homer for Chicago in the seventh inning, helping the White Sox edge the Rangers. Chicago starter Freddy Garcia (5-3) pitched seven solid innings, and Andruw Jones and Alex Rios also homered for the White Sox, who avoided being swept at home by the Rangers for the first time in 24 years. Texas starter Colby Lewis (4-4) was in command for six innings, but three pitches in the seventh blew a 3-2 lead. After A.J. Pierzynski doubled on the first pitch, Quentin sent Lewis' pitch just over the right-field fence. White Sox closer Bobby Jenks worked a scoreless ninth for his eighth save. Angels 5, Royals 4: In Kansas City, Jered Weaver outpitched Zack Greinke in seven scoreless innings to steer Los Angeles past Kansas City. Weaver (5-2) was sharp for the fourth straight start, getting his first win since May 7 behind a Los Angeles offense that knocked around Greinke (1-7). Torii Hunter homered for the second straight game for the Angels, who had 12 hits after getting 14 the night before. Los Angeles (28-28) reached .500 for the first time in over a month. Greinke seemed off-kilter for the second straight home start, extending his post-Cy Young misery by allowing four runs in six innings. Yankees 6, Orioles 3: In New York, Alex Rodriguez homered to help New York inflict hapless Baltimore's eighth straight loss. Brett Gardner also homered and Robinson Cano had an RBI double off Kevin Millwood (0-6) as the Yankees won their fifth consecutive game, all against divisional last-place teams. New York starter C.C. Sabathia (5-3) won for the first time in a month, allowing three hits and striking out seven over seven innings, improving to 12-1 against the Orioles by beating them for the third time this season. Luke Scott hit a two-run homer and Adam Jones also connected for the Orioles. Tigers 12, Indians 6: In Detroit, Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera hit consecutive homers in a five-run seventh inning as Detroit routed Cleveland. The Tigers quickly bounced back from the disappointment of Wednesday, when a blown umpirng call cost pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game. Detroit reliever Brad Thomas (2-0) retired two in the sixth inning for the win. Cleveland's Hector Abriz (0-1) gave up a run on two hits in an inning to take the loss.
