Kurt Suzuki hit a walkoff RBI double with one out in the ninth inning to lift the Oakland Athletics to a 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners in Wednesday's American League action. Suzuki's seventh career walkoff hit provided a happy ending to a night that began with the return of Justin Duchscherer to the mound. Duchscherer missed all of last season while recovering from elbow surgery and dealing with clinical depression. He pitched into the sixth in his first appearance in nearly 20 months. With Kevin Kouzmanoff on first with one out in the ninth, Suzuki hit a drive to the wall in left field off Mark Lowe. Milton Bradley reached up to try to make the catch, but the ball appeared to bounce off his glove and Kouzmanoff raced around to score. Twins 4, Angels 2: In Anaheim, California, Carl Pavano pitched seven sharp innings in his season debut to steer Minnesota past Los Angeles. Pavano allowed just one run, striking out six without a walk to take the win. Justin Morneau and J.J. Hardy each homered for the second straight game for the Twins. Yankees 3, Red Sox 1, 10th inning: In Boston, Curtis Granderson led off the 10th inning with a tiebreaking homer to lift New York over Boston. Granderson hit an 0-and-1 pitch into the right-field seats against Boston pitcher Jonathan Papelbon for his second homer in three games with his new team. Then, after three walks, Mark Teixeira drove in the final run on a groundout as the Red Sox wasted an outstanding performance by John Lackey, who allowed only three hits in six innings in his first appearance since signing an $82.5 million, five-year contract. Royals 3, Tigers 2: In Kansas City, Missouri, Alberto Callaspo hit a tying homer to lead off the bottom of the 11th and pinch runner Willie Bloomquist scored on an error to give Kansas City victory over Detroit. After Callaspo's shot off Tigers pitcher Jose Valverde, Billy Butler singled and Bloomquist ran for him. He stopped at third on Rick Ankiel's double to right-center, but scampered home when Tigers rookie second baseman Scott Sizemore dropped the relay throw. Rays 4, Orioles 3: In St. Petersburg, Florida, Evan Longoria homered and drove in three runs to lead Tampa Bay over Baltimore. Longoria hit a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to give the Rays a 3-2 lead and added a solo homer in the eighth. Rays starter Matt Garza allowed two runs over eight innings, striking out nine. Indians 5, White Sox 3: In Chicago, Cleveland rallied to post their first win under manager Manny Acta. Blue Jays 7, Rangers 4: In Arlington, Texas, Vernon Wells homered two more times as Toronto downed Texas. Wells' tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth off Texas pitcher Dustin Nippert put Toronto ahead to stay, and he led off the ninth with another drive. Blue Jays closer Jason Frasor pitched an uneventful ninth after blowing a save on opening day.
