JEDDAH: Prince Turki Bin Nasser, President of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME), signed Tuesday four new contracts for environmental rehabilitation and cleanup works in the north and east of the Kingdom to redress damage done during the 1991 Gulf War. The contracts, which are worth SR300 million and have a completion period of 18 months, include maritime works in the Douhat Balboul region, coastal clean-ups at Douhat Bal, and land environmental resources projects in the Al-Shabha region and in the north of Hafr Al-Batin. The works are part of wider rehabilitation efforts conducted by the Kingdom in collaboration with the United Nations to restore affected areas and the environmental conservation work of the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment. “The projects constitute a giant step forward for those regions whose coastlines have suffered greatly over the years from oil spills,” Prince Turki said.
