On Tuesday and Wednesday in Jeddah, Khawater Adhalam – which in Arabic means “thoughts of darkness” – will be performing a Black Light play, which involves the use of a dark stage, dark curtains, invisible stage artists and UV lighting. Only a few characters will be visible to the audience. “We've done several shows that are funny, tackle real life issues and narrate short stories,” Mamdoh Khudary, the leader of the theater group, told Saudi Gazette. “Most of our shows focus on current affairs or day-to-day events and thus, we have shows that are attractive because they are relevant.” Khudary explained that the theater group started over a year ago, consisting of like-minded people who wanted to “break the rut”, have some fun and make a difference. “Once you love what you do, you become the best at it and that's what has happened. Excitement at improving our performance made us start considering making our show public. That's when we everything began to change,” he added. When asked how excited they were about performing at the Century Event, Khudary said: “I can't tell you how excited we are about it. We've created new concepts that we haven't used previously. Words cannot describe it and we welcome the world to come see it.” Black Light theater, unlike regular plays, uses special lighting effects. It is performed in the dark and the acts appear exotic when seen with the naked eye. “A Black Light play makes the audience focus only on the stage since it is being performed in the dark; the audience can expect an incredible performance,” Khudary added. Other members of the theater group include Emad Khededos (assistant), Mohammad Al-Harbi, Ibrahim Al-Harbi, Ahmad Janbi, Abdullah Hamed, Sharaf Al-Ghamdi, Mohannad Al-Zahrani, Abdullah Hefni, Faati Fleur, Abdulmajeed Al-Ghowedi, Rayef Al-Baysoni and Ali Salem. The event has received generous support from its sponsor Nescafe. Helen Cupcakes, Rabea Express teabags and Gelato are also event partners besides Mix FM radio station, Grand Kai Fitness Center, Bridges Bookstore, Universal Legends and Bataweel Est. Tickets are priced at SR200 per person and can be bought at seven locations in the city: Bridges Bookstore (Arafat Street), Grand Kai Fitness Center (Serafi Mall, Malek Road), Crepe Cafe (Stars Avenue Mall), Century Events Office (Tahlia St), Italian Cultural Center (Baghdadiya) and the Rio De Janeiro Restaurant (Sari St.).
