Dangerous warning for him who knows and understands!!
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 02 - 05 - 2014

In the Eight O'clock Program run by Mr. Dawood Al-Sherian; the hosted guest has been His Excellency Minister of Electricity & water Mr. Abdulla Al-Husain. Due to that the said dialogue has lit the remarks of our future coming danger and has returned us to what we can call "Horror of wasting of water;" we shall recall what he has said about Hael area for example: "What Hael has consumed in agriculture is eaual to wasting the water for a thousand years." We can compare the situation in the said area with what has happened in every area to the extent of that the production of one fruit costs us many liters of water. Let's consider the leisure agriculture in which olive pill consumption is not less than that of the fruit in spite of that it is not among the list of our necessary consumption. Let's disregard the flowers and water melon and have a look at the planting or cultivation of feed together with the production of milk and consider the high cost which numbers exceed the calculation limit. However, we are still boasting that we are exporting them abroad and keep listening to the warning with neither feeling any fear nor doing anything to respond to it.
The horrible statistics and numbers mentioned by the minister cannot be subject to speculations if we consider that the inventory of such statistics has been built on facts and data that had been derived since the stage of the first agricultural boom until the attempts of reducing the wasting of water by stooping the planting of wheat. However, this is still not enough if we consider that the storage of water that was supposed to be enough for thousands of years has become not enough to cover our needs of drinking water for the coming decades. In spite of all of this, the dangerous wasting of water still goes on without adopting strategic decisions for handling this issue the way every oil barrel extracted and sold abroad or consumed in the country is calculated under the monitoring of the eyes of the national and international economists and geologists! Water is related to us solely and its strategic importance is equal to oil as they represent together basic resources for our lives and for the future of our generations.
Many people wrote about this, appeared in the local satellite channels and sent the same warnings which stated that the coming result shall be worse than the present situation unless rapid policies are developed for the desalinated water and the reserve water which have started to finish. In spite of that the Minister has promised to issue decisions that specify the consumption method; the slow motion associated with applying them means more of depletion of the reserves. The issue exceeds the level of expressing view points, circulation of speeches and consultancies and applying hypocrisy or favoritism with the high officials or traders of big influence as it is an issue of life or death for the present nation and the coming generations. I believe that the first step of any condition related to the agricultural consumption should be setting controls, regulations and standards for wells drilling and monitoring that such standards together with the drained amount of water so that it does not affect the hypothetical reserves which are not compensable. In this regard, it is worth mentioning that the public opinion seeks reducing the agricultural areas including the expansion of leisure planting palm and olive trees and similar fruits.
The problem that all of us know is that there is no coordination between an authority and another in most government department of joint work. This applies on the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Water too as both of them is throwing the responsibility on the other. If the situation continues being so; it shall never serve the interest of the citizen or the homeland. The lack of vital decision shall lead us towards the edge of water poverty which is the most dangerous kinds of poverty as it may lead to wars and fights. In this regard, F. A. O. and other organization say that the world is heading towards lack of water that will lead to major wars.
If such danger is feared from in the countries which have rivers, lakes and rains; how would it be for the countries of deserts which weather threatens of scarce & few rains? The large amounts of rain themselves cannot compensate the severe consumption going on unless it is stopped by crucial decisions.
We are not standing to the side of the pessimistic people who believe that future generations are going to live with no water or oil. However, applying rationality in running the resources is a basic motive for creating a strategy that provides every one with the right of enjoying these resources and making sure that they are going to last for long.
