Random Export
Al-Riyadh Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 12 - 10 - 2012

No one knows how Poultry import operations from abroad are made or how the national poultry are exported to the external markets. It is a confusing formula. Why don't we cover our national needs first without being obliged to import? If we know that the product is produced through wasting a lot of water; this means that we sent the vegetables and dairy milk to the external market in spite of that the cost of each liter of milk is tens of liters of water which percentage of the produced water is 3.95% if we add feed consumption. It is a controversial matter which implies the threat of depleting the few or limited resources. Such practices shall lead to a crisis in the far future due to that there are no new resources except for desalination which cost is high, in addition to its dependence on oil resources only ( for providing the energy required for production).
The is no complete coordination between ministries of agriculture, water, and commerce which led them to be aware of the rising crises such as the recent high cost of vegetables during last month (i.e. Holy Ramadan). For the time being, there is a rise in the cost of poultry which range is thirty to fifty percent. If Ministry of Commerce hadn't did the right thing required for solving this issue through prohibition of export; companies would have continued raising their prices through abusing the rise of the feed exported from abroad. Practically, export should be banned permanently, in addition to fixing fewer percentages in regard to the imported stuff for reaching a compromise that harms neither the producer nor the consumer.
Very briefly, we are not a real agricultural country but a country which water resources are poor. Companies' insistence on benefiting from the present condition and leaving what's after it until its time comes is a strategic mistake. Until now, we are living the drinking water crisis and wasting the underground water through a futile agriculture that does not consider the necessity for rationalization. A lot of studies and warnings about the continuation of get and luxurious olives production, produced by expert people in agriculture and water resources, have been published but have been, at the same time, ignored by ministries of Agriculture and Water, in spite of that the said productions do not constitute an important product for us as corn, for instance.
The strange thing is that the economic rule applied everywhere in the world states that priority shall be for the national market and for achieving self-sufficiency & that the extra product can be, then, exported. What we are doing is contrary to this reality as our agricultural production, dairy milk and poultry are all exported while we are still importing! No one of the high officials has explained this wondrous contradiction to us! We applied the principle of free trade in our market but through its contradictions only, rather than its logical concept. Poultry Crisis may open the door for revising the calculations of whatever related to food production and organizing it according to our needs first, especially if we know that the support and facilities are provided by the state for achieving the citizen's interest or welfare instead of sending them abroad as supported goods which target contradicts these illogical policies.
