The Summit of action, rather than reaction!
Al-Riyadh's Editorial
Published in Alriyadh on 17 - 08 - 2012

We know that the Islamic Summit is not going to provide rapid results bit it can, however, draw the outlines of a realistic work which considers the various circumstances. Faith is a basic and important link between more than 1.5 billion Muslims and the occurrence of disagreements and disapprovals in regard to many cases is a natural thing in this regard. However, the sought target here is how to achieve the solidarity in spite of the various difficulties it has been facing, especially when the politics form the links relationship or dismantle it. If this big (Islamic) world has had a weight by which it could compete with the other clusters economically & through political cohesion, its weight and role would have been changed. When the high percentage of poverty, retardation is spread among a massive sector of the society & the provision of the simplest necessary life means is nonexistent for the same massive sector, in addition to other additional reasons; we should conclude why Islam has been looked at in a different way, especially when it entered an asymmetric warfare with countries and powers that targeted its faith, citizens and sanctities.
Through the examples of the previous summits and their results; we believe that this summit must cause a qualitative radical change in regard to its dealing methods with its own conditions, in addition to the relationship with the external powers that have the influence tools by which they affect the international public concerns or issues. Thinking about setting an Islamic project that considers all cases represents a first step for achieving the available opportunities. The symbolism of the conference is that it represents the whole world, including its continents, spots and population. It is an important event if we reach a common vision and a linkage that unifies our cooperative work.
The effort made by the Kingdom is an extraordinary one. It is not an easy job to hold such a summit in Holy Mecca during the last ten days of Ramadan and in Laylat Al-Qadr (the most holy night) in particular where millions of Umra (minor pilgrimage) performers are present, in addition to leaders of the Islamic World. How such crowds are managed, how roads are kept operative so that people can reach Mecca's Grand Mosque, how is security controlled, and how is accommodation, food, water & health care are all provided. These are issues through which the Kingdom preceded other countries due to that the terrains of the place, pressure of the time & the limited area supposed to absorb the crowds put the security forces before a tough challenge. However, managing the affairs of the pilgrims which are more than "Umra" performers provides the state's bodies with experiences which are developing every year. Indeed, it is a work that exceeds the imagination in regard to its dimensions, preparations and administration.
The Summit's success, even if the minimum level is achieved, shall be a positive development, due to that combining various countries of various traditions, habits, richness in some and poverty & retardation in others create a contentment which believes that the assemblage itself is a victory for King Abdulla's invitation. King Abdulla has a distant vision that urged him to put the Islamic World in the circle of concern. Thus; he can face its cases and complications himself through dialogue, personal confrontation & brotherhood.
The external world may consider that this summit is no more than official attendance but it still considers that Islam is represented by these countries and is one of the parts that drive the world. In spite of the contradictions of its economic and cultural conditions; its spiritual dimension is increasing rather than shrinking. This fact requires dealing rationally with these crowds and avoiding showing them in a negative way, Such perceptions create hostilities found by the colonialist mentality that has been looking at the nations, their religions & spiritualism improperly, while the reality of Islam is coexistence & peace for everyone.
