Huawei Watch 2 set to launch at MWC, Huawei CEO apparently confirms
Published in Alriyadh on 14 - 02 - 2017

Huawei looks seemingly set to unveil its next flagship smartwatch, the Huawei Watch 2, at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
The company has not directly stated that an unveiling is indeed on the cards, but Richard Yu, the company's CEO of Consumer Business Group, seems to have confirmed the unveiling by virtue of his Weibo account.
Huawei CEO Confirms Huawei Watch 2 Unveiling
As per a report by Android Authority, Yu has released a social media post which contains hashtags for "Huawei Watch 2" and "Huawei MWC 2017," with the presence of both phrases in a single post possibly suggestive of the device's unveiling at the said event.
Alongside the post, Yu also included a teaser image for the said smartwatch. It depicts a man, dressed in workout clothing, in what looks like a mid-run position. While there's very little to glean from the teaser image, it does stand to reason, given the outfit, that the smartwatch is fitness-focused, or at least by some measure capable enough to be a digital fitness companion.
Part of the post was also a "made for free spirits," slogan, which is rather vague, and far from indicative of a fitness-focused wearable, but it could very well be just a string of steep buzzwords.
Keep in mind, however, that details about the said device are foggy at best, although this is not the first time it's been rumored for this smartwatch to be unveiled at the said event. In late January, a report suggested that the watch will indeed be unveiled at MWC, with a headline feature: cellular connectivity, which will allow users to make calls, send text messages, and more, without being required to tether the wearable to a smartphone. Maybe "made for free spirits" alludes to this aspect of the smartwatch.
Huawei has already confirmed that it will hold a press event at MWC on Feb. 26, possibly to unveil the Honor 8 Lite, the Huawei P10, and more. It previously said that its press event will feature "the global unveiling of a new flagship device." It's possible that the company could be referring to the new smartwatch.
While the Watch 2 is thin on rumors, it's certainly poised to pack the recently released Android Wear 2.0. Operating system. In fact, development for the smartwatch was pushed back to late 2016 just to parallel Android Wear 2.0 development, as per a report by 9to5Google.
Apart from cellular network connectivity, rumors also suggest that it will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. It's also possible that the Watch 2 could come with a more rugged, sporty look compared to the first Watch.
Needless to say, everything churned out by the rumor mill should be approached warily, but with confirmation straight from Huawei's boss, the newest iteration of Huawei's wearable feels like a shoo-in at this point.
Thrilled for the Huawei Watch 2? What do you expect from the company's forthcoming wearable? Feel free to sound off in the comments section below!
