The Lebanese Wall of Fear
Published in AL HAYAT on 28 - 06 - 2012

Lebanese politicians truly deserve to be listed in the Guinness Book of records as the issuers of the most harmful criticisms and insults that violate all customs of political action to humiliate the opponent and register points before the public. And certainly, there is no shame in changing the alliances and convictions, whenever the winds blow eastward or westward.
The politicians, who are engaged in mudslinging while using all types of slander and smear, have realized that a wide faction among the Lebanese, or rather the vast majority that is affected by the senior officials' concerns about their wellbeing, living conditions, incomes which almost match the Swiss income, and their electricity which is oozing stability despite the blocking of the roads and the division of this touristic country, has become sick of awaiting the repercussions of the Arab spring, of the news related to the Iranian nuclear program and the renewed “nuclear" conflict on the timing of the disarmament of the Palestinians outside the camps. Therefore, they have turned toward marginal issues that do not take into account Lebanon's position on the world map that is being redrafted, from the Hormuz Strait to the Canal of Suez, the border between the two Sudans and the Western Sahara.
Moreover, their media failed to pay attention to the fact that the accusations will be cast against it, and not against the English, due to its shortcomings in controlling the anger of the politicians – whether the deputies or ministers – and containing their wrath which did not leave one weapon unused to undermine the opponent's political and financial legacy! Did former Prime Minister Omar Karame not acquit the English from the tensions in Tripoli – namely on Syria Street – while expressing surprise toward the journalists' fueling of the situation whenever he appeased it?
But did the press and the television channels instigate the deputies and ministers – or some of them to avoid exaggeration – to exchange accusations over the hijacking or taming of the state to render it paralyzed before the parties, or to cast mutual descriptions ranging between the “black faces" and their “bleak" nights, the “yellow general" or the “young gang" among other expressions that do not exclude collaboration with Israel in the country of the resistance? Or does it all aim at enabling the Lebanese to fight boredom during the wasted time, until the spring of the neighbors settles down?
Today, they can enjoy a month of security mobilization aiming at blocking the way before security mayhem, during a heated summer without electricity or tourists. Thirty days might give some an answer to a puzzling mystery after Arab brothers abstained from coming to the country, knowing that their visit would have activated the Lebanese financial swamp of stalemate and distanced the ghost of bankruptcy. But since they are not coming, slander will have to do, even if all the heroes of the waiting phase are claiming to be interested in distancing Lebanon from the volcano of the Arab spring and the fingers of major strife.
22 years have gone by since the end of the wars which were dubbed civil wars in the country of coexistence between the denominations and sects. Despite that, strife remained dormant, while the question surrounding the side which will awaken it hints is like a questioning of everyone's intentions, to avoid accusing the republic of plurality and freedoms of conspiring against itself. Everyone fears this conspiracy, including Hezbollah whose rivals are concerned about a major decision it is concocting, in order to contain the situation when the time comes in Syria on the Lebanese level. The various sides have no other choice but to wait, at a time when the fears are mounting over the collapse of the country's immunity in the face of the major strife project. All of them know the identity of the fifth column and all of them are avoiding catching it red-handed, as long as the battle in and on Syria has not yet been settled in favor of one party.
But was the deployment of elements from the Lebanese army in the southern suburb significant? Could it possibly be a prelude for the containment of the camps before the “next day" for which the March 8 team is believed to be preparing as though inevitable?
Obviously, the talk about an assassination plot targeting Lebanese leaders was followed by the rebuilding of the wall of fear against Sunni-Shiite strife. However, while the terrorization witnessed in Beirut following the airing of Sheikh Al-Assir's interview directed the winds of strife towards other orbits, it provoked suspicions and doubts in regard to a silent insistence on the destruction of the immunity or the local anticipation of regional transformations.
As to the Lebanese people's wager on the state's deterrence of security mayhem or the thugs of the gangs carrying out kidnappings and robberies, it is no longer realistic after they lost hope in seeing institutions which were undermined by the quotas system and led to the graveyard of the greater targets revived. This is enough to cause the violation of all the principles, from the alleged freedoms to the coexistence that is not protected by anyone.
So let us once again claim to be the precursors of the spring, count the disappointments and tally the bitterness of a wretched summer.
