…Before the West's Harvest
Published in AL HAYAT on 03 - 03 - 2011

The colonel does not know that this is no time for jokes. There is bombing, destruction, cries of victory over the “green” era and plans to mobilize fleets, while the rebels in Benghazi are threatening to bring down the fortification of Bab al-Aziziya.
However, the problem with the entire world is that it is failing to understand the Colonel who is “not seeking power”, and against whom the “hallucinating people” have “conspired” despite the fact that he retreated to the tent of the spiritual father of the revolution a long time ago! Yesterday, he revealed that he had surrendered power to the people during the last 34 years. So why are they rebelling, protesting against themselves and treating the colonel so “unjustly”?!
Before his speech on the commemoration of the proclamation of the “people's authority,” the brigades of the Colonel had started bombing the authority of the revolutionaries, while after he considered himself to be the victim of the West's dupery, he pointed to the Al-Qaeda cells which rose to undermine the prosperity of the Jamahiriya and the wellbeing of its people, all of which are owed to the Colonel's wisdom.
He is not yet convinced that the world will not understand him, even if he compares Israel's fighting of the Gaza armed men and the Jamahiriya's fighting of Al-Qaeda's men! He has not heard about the Benghazi and Al-Bayda uprisings and about eastern Libya's fall in the hands of the rebels, and has not seen the coffins, fires and destruction. He is closing his ears so as not to hear the cheers, and is claiming to be the maker of the eternal victory even if in the face of the rivals, i.e. the people he is acquitting from the attacks of the “gangs,” Al-Qaeda and its terror, and the West and all its duperies.
It is the tragedy of an Arab people over whom the leader imposed a forced hibernation on the domestic arena, or displacement in exile. It is the tragedy of a people that is the size of the myth of the leader, who thought he was immune against any earthquakes ever since the West cleared his page and folded the secrets of Lockerbie… until recently.
During the lost time, the Colonel is still making jokes and challenging the United Nations to subject the earthquake which he downplayed to a “rise of gangs,” to a fact-finding process. More martyrs are falling while the West is mobilized and pleased with the Arab earthquake which will expose Al-Qaeda's acts and Iran's wagers. It is harvest time. America and Europe are holding the human rights banner and Washington can threaten with the Lockerbie card again, in the hope of convincing Gaddafi to move to exile. However, if he were to do so and if he were to leave the Jamahiriya and its people, who can guarantee he will not be led from his place of exile to The Hague?
What mostly shows the repercussions of the Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions, is the insistence of the Libyan uprising on rejecting any Western support, whether an American one or any other, to avoid the vilification of its image. Maybe the rebels learned the Iraqi lesson, at a time when Washington and London are dividing the roles to allow the passage of the same Iraqi scenario, i.e. the imposition of sanctions, of a no-fly zone and maybe even the “Oil-for-Food” equation once again. Therefore, the interests of the West require the non-fleeing of the Colonel - even if the battles were to last many months - so that America and especially Britain can capitalize on the partnership with the new Libya.
Before the West's harvesting of the Arab earthquake, partnership with America has also become the topic of discussion of the flourishing forums that are enumerating the victories of the young revolutionaries. And while there is division over the extent of American hypocrisy through the attempts to ride the wave of the Arab uprisings, puzzlement is surrounding the timing of the transformation of the human rights file into a weapon to hold the governments accountable (except for Israel), and the sudden “awakening” of President Barack Obama's administration to support democracy while Washington is still unable to pressure its Iraqi friends in power to distance themselves from the quotas system in the rule and the corruption methods.
The goal is not to question the Arab uprisings which will inaugurate the renaissance era in the region, as long as they distance themselves from the grip of the military and the tears and fleets of the West. The blood of the martyrs can only be upheld by the patriotism of young people who will base that revival on dialogue, without excluding anyone. This is the dialogue that will undermine the era of the leader-guide who holds the absolute truth, that will not allocate justice in shares, retaliate for freedoms with a crime or disown the people whenever it believes that the weapon of “the conspiracy” can earn it a medal which could extend its term.
In Cairo, where the Arab foreign ministers have met, they listened to the demands of some to recognize the facts. Maybe the repercussions of the earthquake which will change the face of the region, will change the task of the Arab League and that of the deferred summit on the beat of the revolutions.
With the beginning of the Arabs' modern renaissance, one may ask about the achievements of the summits ever since the independence, in light of a map divided between poverty, unemployment, oppression and illiteracy.
The tragedy of the Arabs extends over 60 years of exchanged lie and deceit.
