A Saudi multidisciplinary medical team at the Makkah-based King Abdullah Medical City led by Dr. Awwad Al Beshri has conducted successful a rare and critical surgery to remove lymphocytes tumor from a two-year Saudi Arabian boy. The tumor was caused by a congenital defect. 'The child visited the hospital sometime ago and had been under constant medical follow up,' said Dr.Al Beshri, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery consultant. 'The increased size of the tumor, had made it difficult for the child to move his neck. Thus, the need emerged for surgical intervention to save the life of the child, . especially as the tumor had surrounded the vital parts of the neck such as the vagus nerve that acts to lower the heart rate, the phrenic nerve that feeds the diaphragm as well as Glossopharyngeal Nerve in addition to the nerve that controls the movement of the shoulder,' said Dr. AlBeshri. The tumor weighs on the veins and arteries feeding the head and neck and brain, which is serious and critical to the child's life, he added During the seven hours operation, the tumor was completely removed with accurate and careful maintaining of other vital parts. He confirmed that the child has now recovered and exercises his life normally.
