Nineteen people were killed and six were injured in a bus accident in the northern Peruvian province of Chachapoyas, the authorities said Friday according to dpa. The accident happened late Thursday, when the bus plunged down a 150-metre ravine, said the Peruvian government representative in Chachapoyas, Governor Jose Santos. The bus was travelling from Chachapoyas to the adjoining province of Rodriguez de Mendoza, in the region of Amazonas. Santos said that an investigation has been launched into the accident, although the authorities think that the bus driver may have fallen asleep as he went from the Andes into the rainforest. The injured were being treated in Rodriguez de Mendoza, and two were in a serious condition.
