A bomb in Russia's Caucasus region killed 13 people and injured about 100, on Friday, dpa quoted army officials as saying. The attack took place Thursday night at a police checkpoint in the Caspian port city of Makhachkala, about 1,000 kilometres south of the capital Moscow, the Interfax news agency reported A second bomb exploded 15 minutes later, killing and injuring emergency medical personnel, firemen and police that had been assisting victims of the first bomb, the report said. It reportedly had been concealed in a minivan parked next to the police checkpoint. Fourteen of the survivors were in critical condition, the report said. Investigation of the wreckage of the two car bombs uncovered the remains of a man and a woman who may have acted a suicide bombers, police said. The bombings appeared to be the work of regional insurgents fighting against Russian authorities, officials said.
