The U.N. Security Council Monday condemned North Korea's failed rocket launch in a statement agreed upon by all 15 members. The statement “strongly condemns” the April 12 launch that failed after about 2 minutes when it exploded and fell into the Yellow Sea. “The Security Council underscores that this satellite launch, as well as any launch that uses ballistic missile technology, even if characterized as a satellite launch or space launch vehicle, is a serious violation of Security Council resolutions 1718 (2006) and 1874 (2009),” the statement said. Those two resolutions imposed sanctions on North Korea over nuclear tests. Monday's statement also expressed its intent to tighten sanctions on North Korea in the next 15 days. The council also said that the launch “has caused grave security concerns in the region.”
