U.S. immigration officials said they arrested over 3,100 immigrants convicted of serious crimes and fugitives in a six-day nationwide sweep. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the sweep included all 50 states and involved more than 1,900 agents and officers from the agency. Over 1,000 of those arrested had multiple criminal convictions, and the most severe cases involved murder, manslaughter, drug trafficking, and sexual crimes against minors. Fifty gang members and 149 convicted sex offenders were among those arrested. The sweep came a year after ICE said it would focus on deporting illegal immigrants with serious histories of crime and those who posed a threat to national security, while being easier on those who stay out of trouble.
