Prince Saud Al-Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressed today that the Syrian people are looking forward that the Conference of The Friends of The Syrian People in Istanbul will be a turning point in dealing with the Syrian problem on the basis of a combination of seeking to alleviate the humanitarian sufferings of the Syrian people and the provision of a minimum of legitimate defense means for those who are targeted by machines of killing and tools of repression practiced by the Syrian regime. Addressing the Conference here this morning, Prince Saud said, "Brothers, the situation in Syria deserves from us only the consolation of the Syrian people and assisting them to defend themselves. We are participating in this important meeting on the situation in Syria, following our previous meeting in Tunisia in February, in which we reviewed together as the friends of the Syrian people what we should have done to help this people to get out of the current ordeal. Here, I must praise in this regard the position of Turkey which has expressed a genuine friendship to the Syrian people of all sects and groups. One year has passed and we have prepared for one meeting after another and we are still running in our place while crimes against humanity have been increasingly aggravated against the Syrian people. Unfortunately, our successive meetings have not come out so far with practical results that provide the Syrian people with the protection that they need. If the use of a veto at the United Nations Security Council has given the Syrian regime a license to continue the campaign of murder and genocide against its own people, then, the Arab League initiative setting out ways of peaceful solution has been met with the insistence of the Syrian regime on pursuing a repressive security solution as it is indifferent to the human and political costs of this approach. --More
