Japanese Emperor Akihito on Tuesday had fluid extracted from his chest for the second time, the palace said. The treatment was conducted at the Imperial Household Hospital in the palace grounds on Tuesday, the palace was quoted as saying by DPA. The 78-year-old emperor received a similar procedure on March 7 after undergoing heart bypass surgery in mid-February. Akihito, who ascended the throne in 1989 after the death of his father, Hirohito, was hospitalized in November for more than two weeks because of persistent fever and a severe case of bronchitis.
