More than 10 million people in Africa's Sahel region face an imminent full-scale food crisis as drought, poor harvest and rising food prices are battering the region, dpa quoted the United Nations as saying Tuesday. The area affected comprises Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal, all of which require emergency funding of more than 700 million dollars for food security, water, health and sanitation, said Catherine Bragg, the deputy UN emergency relief coordinator. She said at least 240 million dollars should go to buy food supplies and about an equal amount is needed for water, health and sanitation. The UN has mobilized its agencies to tackle hunger in the Sahel, including the World Food Programme, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization and UN Development Programme.
