United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Friday called on Britain and Argentina to peacefully resolve the dispute over islands in the South Atlantic. Ban met with Argentina Foreign Minister Hector Timerman early Friday, and his office said that the two “discussed recent developments related to the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).” “The Secretary-General expressed concern about the increasingly strong exchanges between the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom on this issue,” Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said. The U.N. chief “expressed the hope that the governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom will avoid an escalation of this dispute and resolve differences peacefully and through dialogue.”
