Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor AngelaMerkel on Thursday appealed to their European counterparts not tostand in the way of EU treaty reforms, with the French presidentwarning that Europe faced a dangerous future. "Never has Europe been more necessary. Never has Europe been morein danger," Sarkozy told a congress of the European People's Party inMarseille, France. "Never have so many countries shown their willingness to join the EU. Never has the risk of the disintegration of Europe been sogreat," he warned. Merkel and Sarkozy used the congress of conservative leaders torally support for their proposals for a new treaty to enforcestricter fiscal discipline in the eurozone and give Brussels moreoversight over national budgets. Sarkozy said the two-day summit beginning later in Brussels was alast-chance summit for the eurozone.
